Workplace Exposure Assessments in San Diego

An exposure assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of worker exposure to chemical, physical, or biological hazards in the workplace. Required by Cal/OSHA for many regulated substances, exposure assessments form the foundation of an effective occupational health and safety program.

What is an Exposure Assessment?

An exposure assessment systematically identifies workplace hazards, evaluates the routes and duration of worker exposure, measures airborne contaminant concentrations through personal and area air sampling, and compares results to applicable occupational exposure limits.

Types of Exposures We Assess:

  • Chemical exposures: solvents, metals, acids, gases, vapors, and dusts
  • Lead exposure in construction and general industry (Cal/OSHA Title 8, §1532 and §1532.1)
  • Asbestos exposure during maintenance, renovation, and abatement activities
  • Crystalline silica exposure in construction and general industry
  • Formaldehyde exposure in manufacturing, laboratories, and mortuaries
  • Welding fume and metal fume exposure
  • Noise and vibration exposure
  • Heat stress evaluation

Our Exposure Assessment Services Include:

  • Workplace hazard identification and walk-through survey
  • Personal breathing zone air sampling for regulated and non-regulated substances
  • Area air monitoring and real-time direct-reading instrument surveys
  • Laboratory analysis at AIHA-accredited laboratories
  • Comparison of results to Cal/OSHA PELs, NIOSH RELs, and ACGIH TLVs
  • Written exposure assessment report meeting Cal/OSHA documentation requirements
  • Recommendations for engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE, and medical surveillance
  • Support for written compliance programs (Lead Compliance Plans, Respiratory Protection Programs, etc.)

Why Conduct an Exposure Assessment?

Beyond regulatory compliance, exposure assessments protect your workforce, reduce liability, and demonstrate due diligence. Many Cal/OSHA standards require initial and periodic exposure monitoring — failure to conduct required assessments can result in citations and penalties.
