Bacteria & Sewage Backup Testing in San Diego

Sewage backups, flooding events, and water intrusion from contaminated sources can introduce harmful bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms into homes and commercial buildings. Professional testing is essential to verify that cleanup and disinfection have been successful and that the environment is safe for reoccupancy.

When is Bacteria Testing Needed?

  • Sewage backup from sewer line failure, blockage, or municipal overflow
  • Flooding from storm events, especially when floodwater has mixed with sewage or agricultural runoff
  • Toilet overflow or drain backup affecting flooring, walls, or building cavities
  • Category 2 (“gray water”) or Category 3 (“black water”) water damage events as defined by the IICRC S500 Standard
  • Post-remediation clearance to verify successful disinfection
  • Indoor air quality concerns related to microbial contamination
  • Insurance claim documentation for water damage and sewage loss events

Types of Bacteria Testing We Perform

Surface Sampling

  • Swab or sponge sampling of floors, walls, baseboards, and other surfaces in contact with contaminated water
  • Qualitative screening for indicator organisms: E. coli, total coliform bacteria, and fecal coliform
  • Quantitative analysis when specific colony count data is needed

Water Sampling

  • Testing of standing water or residual moisture for bacterial contamination
  • Source water sampling to characterize the contamination category

Air Sampling

  • Bioaerosol sampling when airborne microbial contamination is suspected
  • Useful when HVAC systems may have been exposed to contaminated water

Our Testing Process

  1. Site Assessment: Visual inspection to identify extent of water damage, affected materials, and contamination pathways.
  2. Sample Collection: Surface swab, water, and/or air samples from affected areas using sterile collection methods. Reference samples from unaffected areas establish baseline conditions.
  3. Laboratory Analysis: Samples submitted to an accredited microbiology laboratory for culture-based analysis including E. coli presence/absence and total coliform count.
  4. Reporting: Detailed report with sample locations, analytical results, comparison to guidelines, and recommendations.

Pre- and Post-Remediation Testing

For sewage backup events, we recommend a two-phase testing approach: pre-remediation sampling to document the extent and type of contamination (which guides the cleanup scope), followed by post-remediation clearance sampling to verify that disinfection has been successful.

Applicable Standards

Testing is performed in accordance with the IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration and S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation.
