What is Asbestos Clearance Testing?
Asbestos clearance testing is performed by a certified asbestos consultant who is independent of the abatement contractor. The clearance process includes a thorough visual inspection to verify that all asbestos-containing material has been properly removed and that the work area has been adequately cleaned, followed by aggressive air sampling using Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) or Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis.
Clearance Criteria
- The EPA clearance standard is 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc) using PCM analysis
- For projects subject to AHERA (schools), TEM analysis is required with a clearance level of 70 structures per square millimeter (s/mm²)
- California DOSH and local air district requirements may apply additional standards
